An Exercise in Happiness©

An Exercise in Happiness© is an exciting new interactive program specifically designed to help children ages 8 to 12 develop emotional intelligence through positive intervention. Exercises such as gratitude journaling, written goal setting and action affirmations, among other exercises are used to help kids identify their core strengths and virtues, their dreams and aspirations and most importantly, how to identify and deal positively with their emotions and those of others.   This program is based on over 40 years of research by some of the most brilliant psychological minds in recent history, and is scientifically proven to boost resilience, optimism and self-confidence.  The goal of An Exercise in Happiness,  is to help immunize our children against depression — a disease that has reached unacceptable proportions.

An Exercise in Happiness provides an opportunity for parents and teachers to be more involved in their children’s happiness and emotional well-being, and to take advantage of this crucial window of opportunity by giving children the guidance that cultivates essential emotional skills.  An Exercise in Happiness© can be done both at home and in the classroom.  Children become more motivated when they are taking part in a program with their friends and classmates, as well as with parents and siblings.

The Science of Happiness

“Positive psychology” focuses on the roles of positive emotions, positive thought patterns, and positive relationships in relation to human flourishing. Martin E. P. Seligman, Professor of Psychology at the
University of Pennsylvania, while president of the American Psychology Association in 1998, promoted positive psychology. Dr. Seligman emphasized the need to broaden the focus of psychology from minimizing mental illness to promoting full, rich lives.

America has seen thirty years of a concerted effort to bolster the self-esteem of its kids.  This movement would be justified if it worked and self-esteem were on the rise.  But something striking has happened to the self-esteem of American children during the era of raising our children to feel good.  They have never been more depressed”.

Martin Seligman PhD. Author of The Optimistic Child, Houghton Mifflin ©1995

"We can look at our emotions as the "ultimate currency" positive being income and negative being expenses, and that our society is becoming emotionally bankrupt, especially our children."

Tal Ben-Shahar PhD, Professor of Positive Psychology at Harvard University. Author of Happier

“Loads of research points to teaching kids emotional literacy as the foundation of happiness. Emotional literacy is a person’s ability to read and understand emotions—to recognize, interpret, and respond constructively to their own emotions and the emotions of others. Emotional literacy is one of the most important keys to mental health and well-being.”

Christine Carter PhD. Director of the Greater Good Science Center at the UC Berkeley, Institute of Human Development
